Pirates of Penzance – a comic opera in English by Gilbert & Sullivan
E.P.I.C. Opera is holding vocal auditions for a staged production of Gilbert and Sullivan’s comic opera “Pirates of Penzance” to be performed at the Majestic Theater in Corvallis February 20 (preview night), 21, 22, 23 in 2020. This primarily acoustic performance will be performed with a live chamber orchestra. Show times are 7:30pm except Sunday matinee at 2:30. Tech rehearsals are February 17 and 18 with a final dress rehearsal on February 19. Prior to tech week, one or two concert style performances will take place outside of the Majestic Theater (at a local church or school etc.) as both a community outreach and as a way of marketing our theatrical staged production at the Majestic.
PERFORMERS AND DIRECTORS ARE VOLUNTEERS ASPIRING TO THE HIGHEST LEVEL OF PROFESSIONALISM. EXTENSIVE PERFORMING EXPERIENCE IS REQUIRED TO AUDITION, BUT NO PRIOR EXPERIENCE IN OPERA OR MUSICAL THEATER IS REQUIRED.
AUDITION LOCATION: TBD Corvallis Oregon
OPEN CALL AUDITION (first week of September TBD) – please prepare a 30 – 60 second art song or operatic excerpt that best demonstrates your vocal quality. A pianist will be provided or you may bring your own piano accompaniment. Auditions sung cappella or with recorded accompaniment are discouraged. Roles will be offered only to those persons who are at least 18 years old by the date of the first rehearsal.
AUDITION CALL BACKS (second week of September TBD) – vocalists who are being considered for a role will be invited to a call back audition approximately one week after the open audition. The call back audition will include a group movement / dance workshop, an acting workshop, and the opportunity to sing one or more excerpts from the role or roles you are being considered for. Pirates of Penzance requires a very involved chorus that can sing while dancing medium-easy choreography in unison.

VOCAL / ACTOR REHEARSALS
Rehearsals will take place primarily in the Corvallis area.
Mid September through early December – one evening per week for chorus + a second rehearsal per week for principal performers to be arranged with the vocal coach and piano accompanist. Rehearsals during this period will typically be 7-9pm and are primarily focused on music and dance choreography.
Mid December through New Years Day – No Rehearsal
Early January through show opening – Rehearsals will be three times per week for the chorus and five times per week for the principal roles. Rehearsals will typically take place 7-9:30pm during weekdays and occasionally 9-noon on Saturdays to work with the orchestra.
Performances are February 27, 28, 29, and March 1, 2020 at the Majestic Theater. Show times are 7:30pm except Sunday matinee at 2:30. Tech rehearsals are February 24 and 25 with a final dress rehearsal on February 26. Prior to tech week, one or two concert style performances will take place outside of the Majestic Theater (at a local church or school etc.) as both a community outreach and as a way of marketing our theatrical staged production at the Majestic. These outreach concerts are likely to be a Friday or Saturday evening in early February.
